What Is Operations Consulting?

Operations consulting is advisory work focused on how a company runs day to day — its processes, operating model, supply chain, and data — to lift throughput, margin, and resilience without breaking the business.

Definition

Operations consulting is the practice of helping organizations improve how work gets done — across processes, people, technology, and the supply chain. Unlike strategy consulting, which answers 'what should we do?', operations consulting answers 'how do we actually run this, well, every day?'

The scope typically spans operating model design, process redesign, supply chain, procurement, manufacturing, service operations, program management, and the data and analytics layer that makes the whole system measurable.

What an operations consultant actually does

A useful operations consultant spends most of their time on three things: diagnosing where value is leaking (cycle time, scrap, working capital, escalations), designing a target operating model with named owners and decision rights, and standing up the mechanisms — weekly reviews, dashboards, gates — that make the new way of working stick after they leave.

When to engage

Margin compression that won't yield to cost-out programs, a transformation that has stalled in the program management layer, a CFO asking for measurable AI productivity, or a supply chain that absorbed too much inventory during the last disruption cycle — all are classic operations consulting moments.

Frequently asked

How is operations consulting different from strategy consulting?

Strategy consulting decides where to play and how to win. Operations consulting makes the win actually happen — through the operating model, processes, and mechanisms that turn strategy into measurable throughput.

How long does an operations consulting engagement run?

Diagnostic work is typically 4–8 weeks. Implementation engagements run a quarter to a year, depending on scope, with the consultant gradually transferring ownership to internal leaders.
